The United States expansion westward and expansion/fear of expansion of slavery are pieces that lead to the Civil War. Every move west resulted in some form of legislation related to the expansion or containment of the institution of slavery (Kansas-Nebraska Act, Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, Wilmot Proviso).
