Speakeasies allowed citizens to get around the consequences of the 18th Amendment.
The 18th Amendment, passed in 1920, prohibited alcoholic beverages in the United States. It was illegal to drink alcohol in America at the time, which is why speakeasies were established. Speakeasies were illegal establishments where you could buy alcohol during the Prohibition era.
